Franchise Glossary

Owner-Operator

A franchisee who is personally and actively involved in the daily management of their franchise unit.

Many franchise systems require or strongly prefer owner-operators — franchisees who work in the business full-time rather than hiring a manager to run it. Owner-operator models are common in food service, fitness, and retail franchises where hands-on management is critical to success. This is the opposite of semi-absentee or absentee ownership models. The franchise agreement or FDD will typically disclose whether on-premises supervision by the franchisee is required.
