The cost of "ongoing"

• Compounding cost over 10 years. On a $1M-revenue concept with a 8.0% burden, you pay roughly $800,000 to the franchisor over a 10-year initial term. That's separate from your initial franchise fee.
• It comes off the top. Royalty + ad fund are taken from gross revenue, before COGS, labor, rent, or any operator pay. A 10% combined burden compresses operator-margin headroom dramatically.

Methodology

Royalty and ad fund rates are extracted from FDD Item 6. Both are stored as text in the database (e.g. "6%", "1.5% -3.0%") and parsed to numeric percentages. Non-percentage formats (flat-dollar monthly fees, "Variable") are excluded from the sample. Where a franchisor discloses a range, we use the midpoint. Combined burden = median royalty + median ad fund for that industry — note this is the sum of two medians, not the median of the sum, so it's an indicator rather than a precise per-franchisee value.
